Are you wondering what games subscription package to purchase? Would you like to explore the benefits of the PlayStation PS Plus subscription service? Are you unsure what the differences are between PS Plus Essential, Extra and Premium? Let’s learn everything you need to know about Sony’s new subscription service together.
PS Plus – beginnings
In late 2021, Bloomberg reported that Sony Group Corporation was working on a new service based on a subscription model, thus providing a response to the competing Xbox Game Pass project developed by Microsoft. Work on the service was kept secret and was being carried out under the code name Spartacus Project. The main idea behind PlayStation Network was to merge the two existing services, PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus, into a single service, allowing users to access a wide library of games and stream games from older generations of PlayStation consoles.
PS Plus in a nutshell
Until now, the PlayStation Plus service was only available in one version, which mainly guaranteed subscribers a few free games per month, the ability to play online, and access to exclusive discounts on selected titles, as well as the PlayStation Plus Collection containing 19 selected games from the previous generation of the console. That is not vanishing, but it is taking on a new form.
PlayStation Plus (PS+ for short) is a subscription service that provides access to a catalogue of selected games. A new version of the service was launched on 13 June 2022, featuring three subscription options: Essential, Extra and Premium. Depending on the model you choose, the service offers access to multiplayer in games, discounts on the purchase of games within the PlayStation Store, the provision of storage space on PlayStation servers and the opportunity to pick up three free productions per month at no extra cost.
PS Plus subscription packages
The new PlayStation Plus is split into three variants Essential, Extra and Premium, each drastically different in content and features, but more on that below.
PS Plus Essential
Sony’s “old-new” Essential subscription, which replaces the existing PlayStation Plus, offers exactly what existing PS Plus subscribers are used to, namely monthly access to free PS4 and PS5 games, online play and cloud storage, numerous discounts and promotions and access to the PlayStation Plus collection.
PS Plus Extra
PS Plus Extra is the first of Sony’s new subscriptions. Alongside the benefits of the ‘Essential’ variant, it guarantees access to nearly 400 games, including the majority of PS4 and PS5 exclusive releases to date. In total, PS Plus Extra subscribers can expect monthly access to free PS4 and PS5 games, online play and cloud storage, promotions and a PS4 and PS5 games catalogue of over 400 titles.
PS Plus Premium
PS Plus Premium is already quite a competitor to Xbox Game Pass. Alongside access to all the benefits of cheaper subscriptions, you can count on an extra 300+ iconic games from the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PSP. Some of these would be available for download, while others, only via the cloud. In total, there are more than 740 games in the catalogue of the ‘premium’ version. PlayStation Plus Premium status also includes access to ‘trial’ versions of premiere titles from PlayStation Studios.
On top of the features mentioned above, with PS Plus Premium, you also have a catalogue of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games with over 340 titles, cloud streaming and trial versions of the latest games.
As you can see, all of these subscriptions have their pros and cons. So be guided by your preferences and budget when choosing. And if you want to get the most out of them, then be sure to create a PS5 controller on our website. On AimControllers you can build your own PS5 controller of your dreams, which allows you to squeeze PS Plus like a lemon. And if you’re a Microsoft fan, then not to worry either – with us, you can create the Xbox Series X controller that puts you ahead of the competition.
